For the lovers of movies about real life struggle and real life difficulties, this is the movie to watch out – Nairobi half life. Set in the cosmopolitan city of Nairobi, Nairobi half life revolves around the life of a young man Mwas, who sets his vision on becoming a film actor. His dream however turns from bitter to sweet when he finds himself in a group of gang involved in criminal activities instead.

Mwas, who lives with his parents in rural home in Kenya, makes a living by selling western action films, which he reenacts to his customers. As a group of actors come into his town, he decides to also follow his vocation and become an actor. He follows the group to Nairobi and leaves behind his family and friends for a new life full of opportunities. In Nairobi he is confronted with the struggles of the big city. Not capable of making a living, he joins a street gang and pursues his acting career on the side. The two lives collide as the gang gets involved in criminal activities with the local police.

Nairobi half life was selected as the Kenyan entry for the best foreign language Oscar at the 85th Academy Awards, but did not make the final shortlist, and is the first time Kenya had submitted a film in this category. The movie will be screened at Goethe Institute on Tuesday 1st October 2013 at 6.30pm. Entry will be free.
